Armide Soliveres has been crowned 2018 APB World Pro Junior champion at Praia de Arda, in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. Tristan Roberts claimed the Men’s division.

In an unprecedented decision, the Association of Professional Bodyboarding (APB) added an extra day of competition to the Viana World Bodyboard Championships.

Sunday was supposed to be the final day of waves at Viana’s Praia da Arda, but a thick, long-lasting fog hindered riders from competing for the event and world pro junior titles.

The decision ended up being a good one. On Monday morning, judges were able to see athletes in the waves and, despite the smaller wave conditions on offer, Armide Soliveres raised the 2018 APB World Pro Junior trophy.

In the remaining 18 minutes of the final, the bodyboarder from the Canary Islands defeated Luan Tavares, from Brazil.

“I am extremely happy because the level was very high, and there were riders from all over the world. This is a beach break with very good waves. They break nicely, offer a few barrels, and allow us to land a few maneuvers,” expressed Soliveres.

The Canarian athlete is not new to the pro bodyboarding circuit. Last year, Soliveres earned a 10-point ride from the judges during Round 1 of the Fronton King Pro.

“I will continue with my life as I always have. I hope I can get more sponsors, and more people know me. I will keep practicing and training.”

In the men’s division, Tristan Roberts beat Alex Uranga. It was his second event win of the season.

“It was a tough event, but I’m happy to take out the win. It hasn’t sunk in yet. Today, when I saw the waves I wasn’t feeling confident, but I managed to find good waves,” explained Roberts.

“It was a super draining competitive week. We struggled with the tides, and the waves are changing in every heat, so my strategy was to adapt, find the best waves and make the best of them.”
